It was incredible and also devastating at the same time. After a month of activity, we were still able to see lava at fissure 8 and the lava flow into the ocean. We almost skipped the tour given the price $$$$ and figuring our 3 young children would not appreciate it but in the end we just couldn't NOT do it with the current lava activity at Kilauea. Bring your credit card if you want to purchase the picture taken of you standing by the helicopter, or the video that is made of your flight.We had an amazing tour with pilot Chris who was knowledgeable about the Big Island, waterfalls, canyons and of course, the volcanoes. If more customers realize that, maybe after awhile he’ll feel less compelled to “ask” for those tips.). (Just remember that your pilot is also a tour guide and should be tipped accordingly. The only minor downside was the pilot’s not-so-subtle hints about hoping for tips, framed as comments about giving us a great trip for which he hoped we would be very grateful. Our pilot made sure that passengers on both sides had the chance to see each sight before moving from one area to the next.
The final part of our trip included flying into spectacular valleys on the northeast part of the island, where we saw countless waterfalls, some of which were over 2000 feet in height. The pilot shared tons of info about Hawaiian culture, farming, volcanos, forests, communities and more.
We even flew over the site where lava still actively flows into the ocean through lava tubes. Seeing the red glow of the lava and the massive area of lava flow from the most recent major eruption gave us the chance to appreciate how our earth changes as a result of such phenomena. It was absolutely breathtaking to fly over and around multiple volcanos. The company seems very safety conscious and gave a great pre-flight safety briefing. I went on the nearly two hour flight yesterday with my 80+ year old mom.
